David Wise acted as the moderator for four election candidate forums organised by the NewsMail during March and April 2012 - three for the state election and one for the local council election.
I had approached David, an accomplished public speaker, to moderate the forums for the NewsMail because a previous attempt at holding one in 2010 for the federal election (with someone else in charge) had not been as successful as I would have liked. For us, the local paper, it was important to be seen to be organising an event that was open to the community and for its benefit, but to not be controlling it or taking sides, so an independent moderator who kept the evening running smoothly and fairly was crucial.
I found David to be an organised, well-prepared and well-informed host who put a great deal of thought into how we could most fairly run the forums. He was excellent at giving candidates the best chance to put forward their message while also keeping them to their allotted time limits, and ensured questions from the floor flowed freely. Importantly, he ensured questions and answers remained respectful and professional throughout.
As a result of David's professional handling of our forums, the NewsMail quickly built a reputation for hosting successful events of this kind, all of which attracted about 100 members of the public. I would not hesitate to ask David to fulfil a similar role for the NewsMail again, or to recommend him to other groups or employers seeking his services.
